SATURDAY, APRIL 9: DEADLY TEXAS TORNADO

Profile America -- Saturday, April 9th. One of the deadliest tornadoes in U.S. history raked across Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas on this date in 1947. Known as the Glazier-Higgins-Woodward Tornado, it is now thought to have been a family of tornadoes, which hit at least 12 towns along a path 221 miles long. At one point, the storm funnel was up to two miles wide. Estimates of those killed range from 169 to 181. After the F5 rated tornado hit the small town of Glazier, Texas, the only building left standing was the town jail. In the years from 2000 to 2008, there were more than 11,500 tornadoes reported in the U.S., causing 537 deaths. Profile America is in its 14th year as a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau.
